Avignon was our home base. We stayed in The Hotel Mercure closest to the town wall and the river. This was a great place to leave from and return each night. We had good meals each night in the Place de l'Horloge the main square. Avignon center is a walled city. The was also the home of the French Popes from 1309-1377.
